If you’re visiting one of our lawyers or independent solicitors in Basingstoke, why not make a day of it? Basingstoke is rich with heritage, dating back to Roman times and has much to offer to visitors such as pavement cafés, bistros, one of the South’s best shopping centres and Festival Place.
Basingstoke is the largest town in Hampshire and is situated in central England, lying across a valley at the source of the River Loddon. It is an old market town, expanded in the mid 1960s due to an agreement between London County Council and Hampshire County Council. It was developed swiftly after World War II in order to accommodate London’s overspill.
Today, Basingstoke is an important economic centre, and is home to many prestigious companies and associations. Basingstoke hosts one of the region’s leading music venues, The Anvil, which offers an exciting and varied selection of dance, theatre, opera, and comedy. Basingstoke also hosts the annual kite and balloon festivals and the music festival Basingstoke Live. There is also a Leisure Park that offers ice-skating, bowling, swimming, cinemas and the fascinating Milestones museum. You can take a stroll through the beautiful Victorian and 1930s streets, explore the shops, houses and workplaces and discover the nature of everyday life for our ancestors. For those who love history there are many nearby historic attractions including Stratfield Saye House, which offers an intriguing insight into the life of the Great Duke of Wellington, whose family was situated there from 1817; while novelist Jane Austen attended balls at the Tudor mansion, The Vyne, which was originally home to Henry VIII’s Lord Chamberlain. Basingstokes’s Roman and Iron Age heritage can also be seen at Calleva Atrebatum, with its well-preserved defensive walls.
